BBL Pipeline celebrates 20 years of connecting the Netherlands and Great Britian with public Open Day in Anna Paulowna
24 August 2026
The installation in Anna Paulowna, which has served as an important link in the energy connection between the Netherlands and Great Britain for the past twenty years, will open its doors to the public on Saturday, 26 September. Visitors will have a unique opportunity to take a look behind the scenes at a site that is normally not accessible to the public. It is here that the 235-kilometre gas pipeline beneath the North Sea connects the two countries.
The installation in Anna Paulowna is the Dutch landing point of the BBL pipeline (Balgzand-Bacton Line). The pipeline is operated by BBL Company. Gasunie holds a 75% stake in the company, while the remaining 25% is owned by the Belgian infrastructure company Fluxys. Through this connection, natural gas is transported safely and reliably between the Netherlands and Great Britain. The pipeline therefore makes an important contribution to energy supply and security of supply in the Netherlands, Great Britain and Europe.
A unique behind-the-scenes experience
During the open day, visitors will learn how the installation operates, how natural gas is transported through the BBL pipeline, and the role Gasunie plays in today’s and tomorrow’s energy system. The guided tour lasts approximately one and a half hours and offers a unique insight into a key part of Europe’s energy infrastructure.
